Located in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland, the small village of Ecclefechan has a tiny population of fewer than one thousand residents. To the local residents this village is known simply as Fechan, and the area offers a small number of facilities and amenities for visitors. The village enjoys an attractive location in the valley of the Mein Water, which is around fourteen kilometers from the English border. When you visit the village you will see that the horizon is dominated by the distinctive flat topped Roman Fort, Burnswark. The Arched House, which is Thomas Carlyle's birthplace is a popular attraction in this village, and is maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. The historian Carlyle was born here in Eccleston, and although he moved away at the age of thirteen he insisted on being buried in the village upon his demise, and his wish was granted. There are a number of places to dine in and around the area, and you can try some of the delicious local specialty snacks and dishes, amongst which is the wonderful Ecclefechan butter tart. You can also try the area's special blended whisky known as The Fechan.
