The settlement of Fort Augustus is located at the southwest end of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It has a rough population of six hundred and fifty and is heavily reliant on tourism. The village is named Cill Chuimein in Gaelic and it is widely thought that it was named after Saint Cummein of Iona after she built a church here. The village is named after the fort that was built by General Wade between 1729 and 1742 and named after the Duke of Cumberland. The fort was later captured by the Jacobites in 1745 and eventually became home to the Benedictine Order which set up the Fort Augustus Abbey.
