Known as one of the sunniest locations in Scotland, it is little wonder that Nairn is such a popular tourist destination. It is located only 16 miles east of Inverness and lies on the A92. At one time the town was split between people that spoke two different dialects of the Scottish language and one group could not understand the other. The original residents were fisherfolk, but the town became popular as a resort area in Victorian times and today is a traditional seaside town. Visit Fort George located on an isolated spit of land that juts into the Moray Firth. It was constructed in the 18th century and was the strongest fortified location in the United Kingdom. Today it is still used as an army barracks. There are two golf courses in Nairn, one of which the Nairn Golf Club is a traditional links club. This area is a world famous golfing destination. Learn the stories of the early residents when you visit the Nairn Museum, which is located in Viewfield House. Shoppers will delight in browsing the selections available in the shops of the town. Visit the ruins of Nairn Castle and imagine what life must have been like for those that lived here. This town is the site of the International Jazz Festival, an annual event held in august that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. One of the largest Highland games is also held here and is only one of a few locations where admission to the games is free. Walk along the harbour to see the boats tied up to the pier. The area just south of the harbour is known as Fishertown and is the site of many small cottages that are home to many of those that still work in the fishery. You will find the Fishertown Museum amidst these cottages. Nature lovers will want to spend some time at Culbin Sands Nature Reserve to see the various birds and wildlife that live and breed in their natural habitats.
