Your guide to Newtonmore, Scotland from Cheap Hotels Ltd.
When you travel to the Highlands of Scotland, a real treat for your vacation would be a visit to the small village of Newtonmore. This village was one of the settings for filming the series the Monarch of the Glen and is truly in the heart of Monarch Country. There are only about 1000 people living here, but tourism is alive and well in the wide range of activities available. It makes the perfect base of operations for exploring the rest of the countryside as the gateway to the Cairngorms National Park. Take the Wildcat Trail to walk around the village to get spectacular views of the River Spey and the countryside as well as the wildlife and plants of the region. The town prides itself on its walking routes and calls itself the “Walking Capital of Scotland”. The area is a paradise for outdoor activities, such as birdwatching, fishing, cycling, pony trekking, horseback riding and climbing. There is an impressive 18-hole golf course in the town as well as five other courses within close proximity. The golf course at Newtonmore is open to the public, but it is wise to book a tee off time in peak season. Take in a game of shinty at the Newtonmore Shinty Club, which is the opportunity of a lifetime if you are not familiar with the game. Spend some time at the Highland Folk Museum where you can see how the early people of the Highlands lived and worked. The museum brings the daily activities to life in this living history museum with the staff dressed in the clothes of their ancestors and demonstrating how they plied their trade. You can’t miss the experience of the Waltzing Waters, an incredible display of water moving to the beat of music. This is the only indoor attraction of this kind in Europe. There are many fascinating relics of the Clan MacPherson at the museum of the same name and general history of the Highlands. See the artist, David Fallows, at work in his studio at the Newtonmore Gallery and browse the selection of artwork available. Bed and breakfasts, hotels, caravan sites and self-catering units are available for your accommodations. The many restaurants and take aways cater to all tastes in cuisine and the small specialty shops offer many unique items for sale.
