Your guide to Chepstow, Wales from Cheap Hotels Ltd.
Located on the border between England and Wales, Chepstow is famous for its castle and its racecourse. There is evidence that there was an Iron Age settlement here, but the present town dates back to the Middle Ages. This is a town with something for everyone. There are about 130 shops in the shopping district, which will make the avid shopper quite happy. Visitors won't have much difficulty finding accommodation with the numerous hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts and there seems to be a restaurant and pub around every corner. The ruins of Chepstow Castle are open to the public all year round. From these ruins on top of the cliff, you have a commanding view of the River Wye. You can still see the various stages of development of the castle in its long shape hugging the edges of the cliff. See the development of Chepstow as a town when you visit the Chepstow Museum and the paintings that show its Roman heritage. The Port Wall dates back to medieval times when the towns and villages were fortified. Much of this wall is still in excellent condition and contains the Town gate, which was the main entrance into the village. The sight of the bridge over the river Wye is one that will really attract your attention as will the architecture style of St. Mary's Church, which dates back to the 11th century. You do have to make an appointment to visit the Hidden Gardens and Grotto of Dewstow, but the two acres of ornamental gardens of the Veddw House on the Wlsh border is open to the public. When you visit Chepstow you can also visit historic sites in Wales and the surrounding countryside that will make your vacation complete.
