London Tourist Attractions - Imperial War Museum Guide

Imperial War Museum Tourist Guide - London

The Imperial War Museum in England's capital city of London is a fascinating place that will appeal to anyone with an interest in history. This museum was established in 1920, after the cabinet of the era made a decision to set up a permanent display that would exhibit materials relating to the First World War. King George V opened the museum in June of that year, but its location was not well suited, and so following a fire it was reopened at its current location in 1936 by King George VI.

Although damage was sustained by some of the exhibits at the Imperial War Museum during the Second World War, the museum was closed to the public during these years and many of the more treasured exhibits were moved to locations outside of the capital city. The museum is actually now housed in part of the building that used to be the famous hospital known as Bedlam - official name Bethlem Royal Hospital. Terms of reference at the museum were extended over the years, and now include the First and Second World Wars, and various other military operations in which Britain has been involved.

Visitors to the Imperial War Museum today can enjoy a host of excellent exhibitions, which are fascinating, enlightening, and educational. History lovers will be thrilled by the range of exhibitions that can be found at the Imperial War Museum, and amongst the exhibitions that have been shown here are the Children's War, the Falklands War, and the Holocaust Exhibition. Of course, if you are planning a trip to the Imperial War Museum it is well worth finding out what exhibitions are being shown when you visit, as you can then make the most of your time here.

You will also find a wide range of war related displays when you visit the Imperial War Museum, and this includes items such as military weapons, vehicles, war related memorabilia, and even art work relating to the various military operations and wars in which Britain has played a part. There is also a library on-site, and photographic archives that will make your time here all the more interesting and educational. Anyone that has an interest in wartime or even general history from the twentieth century will be delighted with the displays, exhibitions, and materials that can be found at the Imperial War Museum, as there are exhibitions, displays, and references that date back from the Great War right through to modern day conflicts.

Getting to the Imperial War Museum via public transport or by car should prove simple and convenient, as this is a centrally located attraction. There is no charge for visiting the Imperial War Museum, so you won't have to worry about budgeting in order to enjoy this fascinating attraction. However, there may be charges for some of the exhibitions, and this is something that visitors should check when arranging their visit. At weekends you can also enjoy free guided tours of the galleries, where you will find some of the highlights of the museum's collection.
