Located in the county of Essex in the UK, Stansted is a busy passenger airport and is used by a number of low cost European carriers. The airport is situated around thirty miles north east of London. It is the third largest airport in London, with the larger ones being Gatwick Airport and Heathrow Airport, it is also the third busiest airport in the whole of the UK. There are good transport links to and from the airport, and it has become an extremely popular arrival and departure point since the popularity of low cost airlines took off.
Whilst Stansted has already rapidly expanded over recent years, it has plans to expand even further, and in March 2008 put forward proposals to construct a second runway and terminal. It is estimated that if this is given the go ahead the work could be completed by around 2015. This will enable Stansted to cope with a far larger number of passengers, and could lead to it overtaking Heathrow in terms of passenger numbers.
