Upper East Side Tourist Guide - New York City
Located in Manhattan in the city of New York, the Upper East Side is a neighborhood that lies between Central Park and the East River. The neighborhood is less than two square miles in area, and is a very wealthy area with rows of beautiful and elegant townhouses. The area was once known as the Silk Stocking District. It all began when wealthy industrialists such as Andrew Carnegie began to build these elegant houses and mansions along Fifth Avenue in the nineteenth century. The area became popular amongst wealthy people of German origins. The Upper east Side is now known as an area that has the highest concentration of individual wealth in the country, and has also become known for being a source of political fund raising. This is an area in which you will find the highest number of stores in the nation that take in a million dollars or more each year in sales, and the popular shopping area around this neighborhood is the classy and expensive Madison Avenue. The population of the area is over two hundred thousand. If you have been to some of the poorer areas of New York this place is well worth a visit if only to see how the other half lives. If you enjoy history and culture you will find a range of attractions to enjoy in this area, and some of the places to visit include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Jewish Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, and many others.
