Yankee Stadium Tourist Guide - New York City
Home to the world famous major league baseball team, the New York Yankees, the Yankee Stadium is located in the Bronx area of New York. Since 1923 the Yankees have been playing at this stadium, and it was once the venue for a number of famous boxing matches as well as home to the football team, the New York Giants. Those wishing to experience the Yankee Stadium will need to act fast, as a new stadium is being built for the Yankees, and upon completion, which is expected in 2009, the existing stadium will be demolished. This current stadium is one that enjoys a rich history and has seen many home games played here by the Yankees, so it is well worth visiting if you get the chance, as the opportunity may no longer be available in the future. The stadium was once dubbed the House that Ruth Built, and this was after the team's star player, Babe Ruth. In addition to various sporting events the Yankee Stadium has more recently been the venue for various other events, from religious conventions to rock concerts. Billy Joel was the first star to perform a concert here, and this was followed by various other high profile names in music such as U2 and Pink Floyd. When you visit the stadium be sure to take in Monument Park, which is home to a collection of plaques and monuments, and contains the team's retired numbers. Also look out for the 138 foot exhaust pipe outside the stadium, which is shaped like a baseball bat. If you are visiting New York at a time when the Yankees are playing at the stadium it would be well worth a visit to see the game, as you will experience incredible atmosphere and energy.
