Your guide to Llanberis, Wales from Cheap Hotels Ltd.
Llanberis is a small town in Gwynedd in North Wales that lies on the A4086 between the towns of Llyn Padarn and Pentre Castell. The name of the town comes from that of its patron saint, St. Peris, but the town developed as a result of the slate quarrying industry that started here. It is the base of operations for many climbers attempting to scale Mount Snowden. The Llanberis Path starts in this town and is one of the easiest routes for walking up the slopes of the mountain. Take the Snowden Mountain Railway to travel up the more than three thousand foot heights of Mount Snowden, which is the highest mountain in England and Wales. Along the way you will experience some of the most dramatic scenery in the country within the 13-minute journey to the top. Another railway excursion that you should not miss is that of the Llanberis Lake Railway. This trip will take you back in time as you ride along the shores of Lake Padarn behind a steam engine. Along the way you will see a Welsh castle that dates back to the 13th century. Just five miles away from Llanberis, you can visit the Segontium Roman Fort at Caernarfon. See the defences built from the earth and symmetrically placed gates and streets. Browse the displays of artifacts that have been uncovered at this site to get a glimpse of life two thousand years ago. While in Caernarfon, visit Caernarfon Castle, which was built by King Edward 1 and is a designated World Heritage Site. Cochwillan Hall in the nearby town of Bangor dates back to about the 15th century. The roof of this hall is a very striking feature which makes it well worth the visit. You have many choices in accommodations in Llanberis depending on your taste and budget. Stroll through the town and browse the selection of goods in the shops. Dine on cuisine from all over the world, including traditional Welsh fare and enjoy a cool drink in one of the pubs. You will certainly enjoy your visit to this town and make plans to return again.
