Llanelli Hotels & Tourist Guides

Your guide to Llanelli, Wales from Cheap Hotels Ltd.

Located on the Loughor estuary in Southwest Wales, Llanelli is the largest town in the Carmenthenshire county. It is only 12 miles from the city of Swansea. The town is surrounded by many smaller towns and villages and the area is collectively called Llanelli Rural. Coal mining and the production of tinplate in the 18th and 19th centuries were two industries that were largely responsible for the growth of the town, so much so that Llanelli had the nickname of Tinopolis.

Rugby is one of the main sports in Llanelli and depending on the time of the year you choose to visit, you may be able to take in one of the matches at the stadium. There are also many active football clubs and it is the site of the International Bowling Championships. Avid golfers have three golf courses to choose from when they get a yen to swing a club and of course, you have to take in one of the races at Pembrey Circuit, the home of motorsports in Wales.

There are many attractions for visitors in Llanelli. If you enjoy walking, you will want to walk the 13 miles of the Millennium Coastal Pathway, but if you choose, you can cycle your way along this route as well. Relax and unwind in Pembrey County Park, which is about 500 acres of parkland just outside of the town. Nature lovers will want to head to the WWT National Wetlands Centre to see the wildlife of the region in their natural habitats and to see the many types of plants growing wild.

Historical properties also abound in Llanelli, one of which is Llanelly House that was built in the 1700s. Although it is being restored, you can still see the Georgian architecture that was popular during this time. Weobley Castel is only three miles from Llanelli. It is not really a castle, but more of a fortified manor, but it will give you a glimpse of what life was like in medieval times. Another medieval castle to visit is that of Kidwelly Castle, which is about 5 miles away. Here you will find walls within walls and a perfectly preserved gatehouse that was constructed in the early 15th century.

For your accommodations in Llanelli, you have many options. There are numerous hotels, self-catering units and bed and breakfasts to choose from. Dine at the cafes and restaurants throughout the town where the choices on the menu are fit for royalty. Your first visit to this town certainly won’t be your last.
